Several years ago, Historic Meridian Park (HMP) residents had a vision to put the “park” back in HMP. A Pocket Park Committee was formed and the hard work of gathering neighbor support, finding suitable land, raising money to purchase the land, and raising money to develop the land began. It was (and continues to be) an on-going project, but we’ve reached a milestone. Through the tireless efforts and the generosity of many dedicated neighbors we did it! HMP has raised enough money to fund the completion of several remaining pocket park projects. We just completed the online ioby (“In Our Back Yard”) funding campaign on time for the next stage of completing the pocket park. With the additional funding, The Pocket Park Committee can:
- Pour the concrete for the shelter and walkways
- Add a toddler swing
- Purchase 2 additional benches
- Provide an outdoor grill
- Purchase solar lanterns to sit atop the brick columns
- Stain the playstation, shelter, and movie benches
- Purchase a movie screen
Although much as been done, on-going projects still need neighbor support. Any and all volunteer help is needed and welcomed. We need energetic and enthusiastic volunteers to maintain gardens and grounds; provide event leadership, setup, and breakdown; fundraising; social media coordinator; tool and equipment donations; and every other activity in-between.
For more information, please visit https://www.ioby.org/project/historic-me. If you have questions about our fundraising with ioby, please contact any Board or Pocket Park Committee member. Annual insurance premiums, maintenance, and repairs will require on-going neighborhood financial support. All donations to the Pocket Park are tax deductible and are separate from HMP dues.
As always, if you are more comfortable financially supporting the park the old-fashioned way, please see any Board member with your tax exempt contribution or you may send it to the Mapleton-Fall Creek Development Corporation with “HMP Pocket Park” in the memo line.
Here is yet another great example of neighbors working together to make good things happen in their own backyards and in the community.
