Have you noticed that the HMP greenspaces on Pennsylvania St. are looking nicer these days? In a unanimous decision, the HMP Board approved a plan to redesign the roundabout at 32nd and Pennsylvania Avenue and the “Triangle” just north of the Esplanade. The plan, spearheaded by newly elected Vice President Stacey Patrick in partnership with the Allisonville Nursery, highlighted a mix of spring, summer, and fall blooms while also reusing as many of the existing plants as possible. “Our goal was to beautify the spaces while also minimizing maintenance through the use of drought-resistant native plants,” says Patrick.
So what’s next for the green-spaces? Last year, President Cassie Mehlman-Rhys proposed a plan to include the addition of a tall, historic urn in the center of the roundabout to improve historical character, and painted directional signage to improve safety. Those items, approved by the Board, will be implemented this summer. The Board would also like to thank Larry Sanner, who has spent many years maintaining the roundabout. We are hoping his job will be a bit easier through the use of hardier, easier to maintain plants!
