Street sweeping, as part of a $2.1 million initiative, is underway in Indianapolis.
Indianapolis funded and launched a new street sweeping initiative recently to reduce debris and sediment runoff into the combined sewer system and waterways. HMP is located within Zone 2 of the Combined Sewer area boundary and will be scheduled for sweeping 3 times per month. Zone 2 will be swept on Tuesdays during the night shift, sometime between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM. The roads through HMP that will be swept include Pennsylvania St., Washington Blvd., 30th St., and 34th St. Cars do not have to be moved, but efforts to do so on Tuesday evenings will maximize the benefit to the neighborhood. The HMPNA Board contemplated recommending a schedule in which residents on the affected streets abide by a schedule, alternating which side of the street cars park on Tuesday nights (north/east sides on even dates, south/west sides on odd dates).
According to the Department of Public Works (DPW), street sweeping contributes to sustainability, resilience, and public health by:
- Preserving the lifespan of public infrastructure
- Minimizing the burden on the Combined Sewer treatment system
- Diverting potentially hazardous or harmful debris from entering waterways
- Removing possible obstructions from storm water inlets, which might otherwise contribute to local flooding.
DPW is not accepting service requests to add additional streets to its current sweeping program at this time.
