On a stormy afternoon in April, a 1.5-ton historic marker was carefully placed on the median at 33rd and Pennsylvania St. The marker honors HMP’s listing on the National Register of Historic Places and consists of a large boulder of Indiana granite with a recessed bronze plaque.
The marker project had been in the works for over two years and is a product of the HMPNA’s strategic plan. “This marker helps us in two important areas,” says Jess LaNore, a member of HMPNA’s board of directors who spearheaded the project, “It contributes to both neighborhood beautification and awareness. This is a great neighborhood to live in and we want everyone to know it.”
Proceeds from previous HMP home tours were used to pay for the long-awaited marker, which sits at the median’s south crosswalk and is easily visible by both motorists and pedestrians. As part of the Department of Public Works’ Adopt-A-Median program, St. Richard’s School continues to do an amazing job of maintaining the landscaping along the strip.
In 1989, HMP submitted its application for the National Register with the assistance of Suzanne Rollins Stanis, then the preservation historian and now the director of heritage education and information at the Historic Landmarks Foundation of Indiana. The application was approved the following year.
