At the 2018 Fall Festival, the most competitive neighbors gathered for a friendly battle for the coveted Golden Ladle and Golden Fork. The set up was intense. Side-by-side sat several culinary creations the likes of which the world has never seen. Each contestant, confident in their masterpieces, carefully placed their chili and cornbread in a line on the table. Stripped of its personal identity, it was given a number.
One by one, before a panel of highly-distinguished judges, a slice of cornbread or a small bowl of chili was placed. Judges examined the dish, admired its texture, color, aroma. They tasted it, scored it, and collectively, with the stroke of a pen, determined who would be crowned Chili King or Queen or Cornbread King or Queen.
After the judging, neighbors gathered to have their own bowl of chili, slice of cornbread, and some of the many sides that were available. Children played in the Pocket Park’s play area or sat restlessly as Jeanne Rieger painted their faces. Parents mingled. Mark Herner played the guitar and provided entertainment. New residents got a feel for why HMP is so special. At the perfect moment, Ryan Noel, HMPNA Board President stood before an anxious crowd to announce the winners of this year’s competition.
Several tense moments passed. The air was thick with anticipation. Neighbors looked around anxiously wondering who would claim the prize. With perfect timing, Ryan announced the winners of the Golden Ladle and Golden Fork as long-time neighbors Dr. Steve Towns and Lee Smith respectively. Congratulations to Steve and Lee! And thank you to everyone who submitted a dish or brought a side dish.
Through the generosity of Daredevil Brewing, neighbors who were at least 21 years of age donated at least $5 received a beer in appreciation. The donations will be used to help complete the next phase of the Pocket Park.
