2015 Tour of Homes Set for May 30 and 31
Historic Meridian Park, one of Indianapolis’ pre-eminent early 20th century neighborhoods and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will offer a rare glimpse inside a number of its beautifully maintained and restored homes and some of its gorgeous gardens during the 2015 Tour of Homes set for Saturday, May 30 and Sunday, May 31 from noon to 6:00 PM both days.
Located within the Mapleton-Fall Creek Neighborhood, Historic Meridian Park is bounded by Pennsylvania Street and Washington Boulevard from 30th to 34th Streets.
Tour organizers say they’re looking forward to sharing the splendor of their near-northside community with the public for the first time since 2010. In particular, they are excited to shine the spotlight on “green” building practices through creative reuse, landfill diversion, and energy efficiency in the neighborhood.
“Over the years, technology and design have made major progress, especially as it can be adapted for historic homes,” said Kara Haughey, chair of the 2015 Tour of Homes. Great emphasis has been placed on being green by re-purposing old materials and becoming energy efficient. “Owning and renovating old homes doesn’t have to be the daunting task people imagine them to and we can be green in the process. We have at least five brand new kitchens to show how this can be done. We also have some of the most amazing ways to utilize re-purposed materials.” Haughey continued. “Featured homeowners have added to our neighborhood in a unique and responsible way. These homes have a great story and we are proud to highlight them on this year’s tour.” Haughey said.
Tour organizers are thrilled to showcase the before and after progress in restoring homes that are over 100 years old. The Historic Meridian Park Neighborhood Association Board of Directors has been very supportive of the committee’s work in the planning of this year’s tour. Haughey shares, “Being a part of a community like this and seeing the love put in to these older homes in a renovation project is inspiring.”
One of Indianapolis’ first suburbs, Historic Meridian Park is best known for its Arts & Crafts architecture, but also features outstanding examples of Tudor and Colonial Revival, American Four-Square, French Eclectic, and American Farm House styles. All of the buildings in the area reflect the use of natural materials such as brick, stucco, and tile, and they emphasize visible structural elements such as beams and large overhangs.
