The HMPNA Board has been hard at work developing a strategic, long-term plan for the neighborhood.  Below is an overview of the long-term plan and key member’s responsibilities.  Non-board members are welcome to assist with any projects they find interesting.  Please contact a board member if you’d like to take a greater role in neighborhood activities.

Priority #1

Increase quality of life (QoL) and social connectivity within HMP through the LISC program, continuation of popular social events, and the additional outreach initiatives that include increased participation in HMP events and increased diversity of the participants.

Priority #1 Projects and Responsibilities

  • Block Parties (Hope Tribble):  Smaller gatherings of neighbors on a particular block.  A wonderful opportunity for neighbors that prefer smaller, more intimate gatherings.  Hosts are needed.  If interested, please contact Hope.
  • Increased Diversity and Participation in HMP Events (Hope Tribble):  If you have suggestions on how to increase the diversity of the HMP social events, please contact Hope.
  • Helping Component of Mission Statement (Hope Tribble, Karla Johnson):  Providing assistance to our neighbors increases a sense of connectivity.  Do you have old school uniforms that another child could use? Appliances?  Does your teenager need school service hours?  If you have ideas, please contact Hope or Karla.
  • HMP Senior Program (Leslie Hughley):  Many seniors need additional assistance.  Identifying those seniors in our neighborhood and providing assistance is essential to keeping them connected to the larger community.  If you can assist in any way, please contact Leslie.
  • General Meetings (Cassie Mehlman-Rhys):  If you have ideas regarding the general meeting, please contact Cassie.
  • General Meeting and Signage (John Carmer):  Can you be responsible for placing and/or retrieving signs before and after events?  If so, please contact John.
  • Social Events (Open):  Please contact a board member if interested in assisting with this priority.

Priority #2

Increase neighborhood beautification through clean-up and redesign of green spaces (roundabout, triangle, and crosswalk), street and alley trash cleanup programs, commercial historic renovation guidance documents, and development or a pocket park and possibility a community garden.

Priority #2 Projects and Responsibilities:

  • Pocket Parks (Cassie Mehlman-Rhys, John Carmer, Karla Johnson):  Interested in assisting with the pocket parks?  The committee is interested in hearing from you.  Please contact Cassie, John, or Karla.
  • Green Spaces (Stacey Patrick, Cassie Mehlman-Rhys):  If you are interested in gardening and/or assisting with the beautification of our green spaces, please contact Stacey.
  • Community Garden (Stacey Patrick):  A community garden would make a beautiful contribution to our neighborhood.  Organic and home-grown vegetables would make a delicious addition to any dining room table.  If interested or know of an ideal location for a community garden, please contact Stacey.
  • Interior/Commercial Renovation Guidelines (John Carmer):  Providing guidance on historic guidelines to neighbors that are interested in rehabilitating their home will help HMP preserve our historic look and feel.  If interested in assisting with the guidance, please contact John.
  • “Then and Now” House Histories (John Carmer):  Cataloging, photographing, and providing a historical biography of neighborhood homes will provide a rich addition to our home tour histories and historic designation.  If you have information on your home that will help us catalog your home’s history, please contact John.
  • Youth Trash Club “Street Clean Up” (Karla Johnson):  The days when the street sweepers came through HMP once a month have long since passed.  Now it is up to us to maintain the beauty of our neighborhood.  Organizing the HMP children into a “trash club” is one way to keep the neighborhood clean while teaching the children the value of community involvement, civic pride, and a sense of responsibility for neighborhood.  Please contact Karla for more information.

Priority #3

Increase crime prevention and safety strategies in HMP through revamping the crime prevention program.

Priority #3 Projects and Responsibilities:

  • Safe Neighborhood Awareness Program or “SNAP” (Bryan Bigelow):  HMP, like all neighborhoods, in not immune to crime.  Neighborhoods with robust and vibrant crime watch organizations are less desirable to criminals.  Reestablishing the HMP crime watch program is a priority.  Please contact Bryan for more information.
  • QoL Plan Implementation (Cassie Mehlman Rhys):  Implementing the multifaceted QoL plan will take many engaged participants.  If you have been involved in the process all along or are new to the QoL plan and would like to assist, please contact Cassie.

Priority #4

Strengthen the neighborhood identity and solidarity through historic markers, gateway signage, an ongoing communication plan, additions to the by-laws for greater transparency in HMPNA Board business dealings, the Nominating Committee, and election process, and regain non-profit status.

Priority # 4 Projects and Responsibilities:

  • Historic Markers (Jess LaNore):  The first of the HMP historic markers was unveiled at the HMP Christmas Party.  Historic markers identify HMP as a premier place to live and provide visitors a glimpse into our history.  Please contact Jess for more information or ways to assist.
  • Gateway Markers (Mike Walsh, Bryan Bigelow):  In addition to historic markers, gateway markers are another way to set HMP apart.  Gateway markers are what visitors will see as they enter into HMP.  Contact Mike or Bryan to offer your assistance.
  • Communication Plan (Cassie Mehlman-Rhys):  Need to know what is going on in your neighborhood? Do you have information you need to share to all your neighbors?  HMP is working on an improved communication plan.  If you have idea to improve communication among neighbors Cassie would like to hear from you.
  • Urban Times (Karla Johnson):  Know a neighbor that has a story to tell?  Is there something interesting that you’d like to see highlighted in the Urban Times? Please contact Karla with ideas.
  • Non-Profit Status (Jess LaNore):  Without non-profit status, HMPNA is ineligible to apply for many grants and other funding opportunities that would benefit the neighborhood.  Regaining our non-profit status will allow us to bring in much needed funding for HMP.  Contact Jess to assist.
  • By-Laws (Jess LaNore):  Review and possible revisions to the by-laws are one of HMPNA’s important strategic goals.  If interested in working on this project, please call Jess.
  • Google Docs Organization (Stacey Patrick):  Providing greater transparency in HMPNA Board affairs is important.  If you are willing to assist in this endeavor, please contact Stacey.
  • BODSOP (Jess LaNore):  Creating a Board of Directors Statement of Policy (BODSOP) for improved transparency and communication is important.  If interested in this process, please contact Jess.
